Cafédirect Producers' Foundation (CPF) Online Communications in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania

CPF is exploring different business models including one based on an exchange of micro-payments between farmers (typically low-income smallholder tea and coffee farmers). One proposed model would see farmers who are seeking advice pay a small fee that will be given to other farmers who share useful content via the internet or SMS.
Recently a number of SMS and web-based platforms have been launched that provide smallholder farmers in developing countries with information on weather, inputs and market prices. Although proving to be very beneficial to farmers, the majority of the existing services provide top-down information rather than encouraging farmers to share expertise and collaborate.
Individual farmers have developed innovative, low-cost solutions to challenges such as limited market access and the impact of climate change – which could potentially be implemented by thousands of other farmers globally. CPF recognized this and established WeFarm as an online forum to allow farmers to exchange farming techniques and lessons learned.

CPF is also looking at additional models for generating revenue including advertisements.
The service will deliver benefits to low-income farmers as both consumers and service providers. Farmers who provide content and advice will be empowered through recognition of their expertise and be rewarded according to the usefulness of the information they provide. Farmers who access content will benefit from improved farm productivity resulting in increased incomes.
IAP support will be used to leverage the ongoing feasibility and market studies being undertaken by CPF in order to design, test and develop a sustainable business model for the platform.
