Chigondo Honey and Agro-Processing Centre, located in Wedza’s Chigodora Ward 9, was initiated in 2000. It is owned by a registered group of farmers who are part of the Chigondo Environmental Action Group (EAG). More than 270 beekeepers are involved in the project. The main objectives of the group include: to participate in the overall economic, environmental and social development of Chigodora Ward by increasing production, sustainable utilisation of resources, improvement of supply and marketing channels and mobilisation of financial and material resources.
The Chigondo EAG is involved in beekeeping, honey processing and agro processing. With help from Environment Africa, the EAG has built a honey and agro-processing centre. They own a total of 3,140 mounted beehives, of which 75% are modern and 25% traditional. Traditional hives yield 17kg of honey per hive while modern hives yield 20kg per hive. The high quality organic honey produced by the centre has passed quality tests by the Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ).
Although the group has received support from Environment Africa, some challenges still remain. These include the shortage of funds to purchase modern beehives that produce more honey per hive, market linkages and pricing of packaging labels.
