What approach should large companies take when setting up and implementing inclusive business initiatives? What are the successful companies doing right and what do others need to do better? These were just some of the questions addressed in a live online webinar on Friday 26th June hosted by The Practitioner Hub and Business Call to Action. The discussion was frank and engaging, and packed with plenty of learnings from the first hand experience of panellists that have long been engaged with implementing inclusive business initiatives for large companies. In the webinar, Erik Simanis emphasises the need for companies to embed inclusive ventures into their core business. As Head of the Frontier Markets Initiative for Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at Cornell University's Johnson School of Management and Entrepreneurship, Erik draws upon years of experience working with corporates bringing inclusive business initiatives to life to explain that ventures must fit with the core aims of the business to succeed.
Novartis International’s profitable social venture Arogya Parivar in India uses the 4As framework of awareness, accessibility, affordability and adaptability to reach more than 17.5 million low-income people. Charlie Hough, Head of Corporate Responsibility Strategy & Stakeholder Engagement, talks us through how they have been able to achieve this.
Paperless banking solutions and use of new tech and big data are addressing the needs of the changing population in Brazil, with Itau Unibanco’s micro credit initiative reaching 100,000 since its inception 10 years ago. Eduardo Ferreira, Head of Inclusive Business at Itaú Unibanco discusses how their approach to putting the customer first and engaging with their clients has allowed them to drive their inclusive business forward.
The debate was moderated by Tom Harrison, Technical Director of DFID’s Business Innovation Facility, who asked questions from the audience including:
What are the bases used to assess the social value created through inclusive business?­
We see a number of effective IB initiatives embedded in the CSR unit of a company. Can this be a long-term strategy for success despite the fact that they are not in the core structure?
­Businesses talk a good game on being agile, embracing prototyping and failures but that appetite for risk with inclusive business models isn't always borne out in reality. Should businesses partner with smaller social entrepreneurs & NGOs more to mitigate this?­
