Ignitia’s business venture aims to distribute daily weather forecasts and early warning information to 90,000 smallholder farmers in Ghana, through already established farmer associations. Farmers pay a small price to receive a daily, automatically-generated text message with a weather forecast tailored to his or her specific location using GPS coordinates. The main commercial driver is to be the first mover in a market that caters to the growing demand for accurate and easily accessible weather information. Once the product has been fully developed, there is scope for an industry to develop around buying, selling and refining commodities and derivative products.
Reliable weather information can help farmers be more agriculturally productive, keep more food secure and better able to plan for disaster risk reduction when hit by natural hazards. Customised text messages will enable farmers to make appropriate sowing and harvesting decisions and make the most efficient and economic use of limited resources.
Support from IAP will be used to setup the technical and software framework for the SMS weather forecast delivery system, and design a clear and concise format for messages, particularly since literacy rates are relatively low among the rural poor.
